“Shadow work” gets thrown around a lot, often vaguely. Here’s a plain description: it’s the practice of looking honestly at the parts of yourself you’ve hidden, denied, or disowned — often because, at some point, showing them wasn’t safe. Anger you were taught was unacceptable. Needs you learned to bury. Reactions that embarrass you.

The work isn’t about “getting rid of” these parts. It’s about actually seeing them, understanding where they came from, and integrating them rather than letting them run your life from the shadows, unexamined. This tends to surface uncomfortable material — which is exactly why it’s real work, not a wellness trend. If it brings up something significant, that’s a sign to slow down and consider real support (a therapist, a trusted guide), not to push through alone.
