Your first post matters more than most — it’s the first impression the community forms of you, and often the thing that determines who reaches out first.
What makes a good introduction #
- Be specific, not polished. “I left a career in finance because I couldn’t shake the feeling I was optimizing my life for the wrong things” tells people far more than “excited to be here!”
- Say what drew you. Was it a specific Initiative? The philosophy on the About page? A friend’s experience? This helps people with similar pulls find you.
- Ask for something, if you have something to ask. Looking for people working on a specific Initiative, or just people to talk to about a specific struggle — say so. People here generally want to help.
What to avoid #
- Don’t lead with your resume. What you’ve done matters less here than why you’re here.
- Don’t feel pressure to have your whole “why” figured out. “I’m not entirely sure yet, but something told me to apply” is a completely legitimate introduction.
After you post #
Give it a day or two. This isn’t a fast-scrolling feed — people here tend to read before they respond, so a thoughtful reply might take a little longer than you’re used to elsewhere. That’s a feature, not a bug.
